The meeting, led by Dr. Jamelyn B. Palattao and Mr. Paul Hui Lagura alongside practitioners from NS2D Studios, CSEMC, Ameda Visuals, and Masterkii, produced concrete directions: heritage asset mapping, lenticular and interactive visual formats, and the expansion of the Creative Mappers Program and Creataverse Project, with both institutions committing to a working committee to carry the collaboration forward.
In celebration of Women's Month 2026, the MSU-IIT Historical Society (MIHS), together with the MSU-IIT Indigenous People Student Advocates (MIPSA), Mindanao Heritage and Indigenous Center, Gender and Development Center, and the Department of History, launched the exhibit "Lead Like the Babaylans: Filipina Leadership Then and Now, A Visual Narrative of Filipina Leadership Across Time" on March 23, 2026, at the University Library Mini-Theater Lobby of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology. The exhibit honors the enduring legacy of Filipina leadershipโfrom pre-colonial babaylans to modern-day trailblazersโthrough a visual journey celebrating women's contributions to culture, advocacy, and nation-building.
The Department of History at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) celebrates faculty member Jay Rome de los Santos for presenting his research at the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) 2026 Conference, held March 12โ15 at the Vancouver Convention Center in Canada. As part of the Rising Voices panel "Against the Tide: Agency in Volatile Times for Southeast Asia," sponsored by the AAS Southeast Asia Council, de los Santos delivered his paper, "Entangled Spaces: Colonial Encounters and the Making of Northern Mindanao, Philippines, 1622โ1768," which examined how colonial spaces in the region were shaped through complex encounters among missionaries, colonial authorities, Indigenous and local communities, and the Moros during the 17th and 18th centuries. Drawing on archival sources, his study highlighted how negotiation, accommodation, and resistance on the ground influenced imperial ambitions and regional formation. Currently on study leave while pursuing his Ph.D. in History at the University of the Philippines Diliman, de los Santos acknowledged support from the AAS Southeast Asia Council and Trans: Trans-Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia for enabling his participation. His presentation marks both a personal academic milestone and a significant affirmation of MSU-IIT's growing presence in international scholarly conversations on Southeast Asian history.
The Department of History recently held HISTgutanay: Babayi tu Sugilanon, a webinar dedicated to amplifying women's voices, stories, and contributions in shaping historical narratives and collective memory, on March 18, 2026, via Zoom. The event featured distinguished speakers Prof. Faina C. Abaya-Ulindang, Ph.D., a respected Mindanao historian and author of Resettling the Huks in the Land of Promise whose scholarship spans migration, land conflicts, secessionism, and gender history, and Chilou C. Roble, LPT, MACE, MAELT, a Master Teacher, literacy advocate, and Gender and Development coordinator with over two decades of experience promoting inclusive education and community empowerment. Through insightful discussions on women, history, and society in Mindanao, HISTgutana successfully fostered meaningful engagement among scholars, educators, and the public, reinforcing the vital role of women's perspectives in enriching historical understanding and collective memory.
On 14 February 2026, Ateneo de Davao University held its Traditional University Awards and Conferment of Honorary Degrees (2025โ2026) at the Jacinto Campus, honoring public work in peacebuilding, education, social justice, environmental protection, cultural work, and community care. Ateneo conferred the Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa on Prof. Rudy Buhay Rodil, citing his scholarship on Mindanao and the Moro people, his teaching of tri-people history (Moro, Lumad, settler), and his role in government peace negotiating panels. On 30 December 2025, the Department of History, in partnership with the City Government of Iligan, commemorated Rizal Day through the soft launch of Kaagi, Iliganโs first history book. The program opened with remarks from Dr. Jamelyn B. Palattao, followed by messages from city and university representatives, and an overview of the book by Dr. Marjorie Almario-Magdadaro, culminating in the unveiling; printed copies were slated for free distribution to selected schools, offices, and libraries by February 2026. The Rizal Day commemoration continued with a talk by Asst. Prof. Michael Anthony R. Ngo and concluded with wreath-laying led by Dr. Cecilia B. 01 November 2025 - In line with the Department of Historyโs continuing effort to immerse students in public history and heritage work, undergraduate students of HST 100 (Pre-colonial History of the Philippines) and HST 101 (Economic History of the Philippines) of Mindanao State UniversityโIligan Institute of Technology embarked on a three-day educational trip across Northern Mindanaoโs key historical and archaeological sites from October 29 to 31, 2025.
Guided by Assistant Professor Celyn J. Teatro, the activity was organized in celebration of National Museum and Galleries Month, emphasizing the vital role of museums as spaces of collective memory, cultural education, and sustainable heritage preservation.
On 23โ25 October 2025 (reported 26 October 2025), faculty, alumni, and graduate students of the MSUโIIT Department of History participated in the 46th National Conference on Local and National History of the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS) at Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet, presenting Mindanao-centered studies on identity, education, and governance aligned with SDGs 4, 10, and 16. Presenters included Dr. Cecilia B. Tangian (also representing the NHCP) on Matigsalug identity (1975โ1994), Asst. Prof. Jonah Pearl Agad on Moro pensionados (1910โ1945), alumnus Abdul Majid Abdul Azis on the Dansalan Declaration and post-1935 Moro exclusion, and Assoc. A key component was a research exchange with Peking University, where MA History student Ruh J. 09 October 2025 - Upon the invitation of the Office of Muslim Affairs of the Municipality of Glan, Sarangani Province, Dr. Cecilia B. Tangian (MSU-IIT), Dr. Marjorie Almario-Magdadaro (MSU-IIT), Assoc. Prof. Rebino C. Batoto (MSU-Naawan), and Ms. Bermelie L. Martinez, International Research Scholar on Indigenous Dance, participated in the annual Moro and Indigenous Peoples (IP) Days held on October 3โ6, 2025.
The researchers actively immersed themselves in the vibrant histories and cultures of the Sangir, Maguindanaon, Meranaw, and Tausug communities during the Moro Day celebration, and of the Bโlaan and Tagakaolo groups during the IP Day observance. During the opening program for Moro Day, Dr. Tangian, serving as NHCP Commissioner and Research Project Leader, delivered a special message emphasizing the significance of cultural preservation and historical recognition among the ethnolinguistic groups of Mindanao.

03 September 2025 - In celebration of History Month 2025, the Department of History of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology mounted its annual History Caravan last August 20โ27, 2025, reaching out to senior high school students across Iligan City. The schools are the following: MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School (MSU-IIT IDS) and Iligan City East National High School - Sta. Felomina.ย
The week-long caravan highlighted the vitality of historical study, promoted the BA History program, and brought the Instituteโs faculty and students closer to the youth of Iligan.
30 August 2025 - As its culminating activity for the 2025 History Month, the Department of History convened faculty members and invited experts for a learning session and writeshop aimed at refining the approaches, frameworks, and sources that will guide the Departmentโs writing of the contemporary Bangsamoro history.
The activity reaffirms the Departmentโs commitment to writing Bangsamoro History, contributing not only to scholarship, but also to sustaining the gains of peace processes and advancing the broader aspirations of nation-building.

The meeting focused on plans for the Digital History Project and an accompanying digital exhibit, which will feature innovative storytelling approaches to local histories. The paper is the first academic work to systematically examine institutional support mechanisms (or the lack thereof) for this vulnerable segment of the student population.

The forum, organized by the Asia Research Institute (ARI) of NUS, is recognized as a premier platform for PhD candidates working on Southeast Asian topics to present their research, engage in interdisciplinary discussions, and connect with scholars from the region and beyond. It features one-week fellowship, including masterclasses on research methodologies and skills-based sessions on academic writing, presentation skills, and publication strategies.

31 May 2025 -ย The Department of History of MSU-IIT and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH-BARMM) marked another milestone in their ongoing collaboration with the Ceremonial Fund Transfer for the Writing of Bangsamoro History Project. The event was held at the OC Conference Room, CEBA Building, MSU-IIT.
This ceremony follows the Memorandum of Agreement signed several months ago, which officially launched the partnership between MSU-IIT and BCPCH-BARMM. The project aims to document and critically write the history of the Bangsamoro people in Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, with a specific focus on the contemporary post-war period.
30 May 2025 - Women scholars from the Mindanao State UniversityโIligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) brought powerful local narratives to a global platform during the ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐งโ๐ฌ ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ (๐๐๐๐) ๐๐๐๐, held at the Four Star by Trans Hotel in Bali, Indonesia on May 29โ30. Themed โ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐: ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฐ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐,โ the conference gathered feminist academics, activists, and practitioners from across the globe to confront the challenges facing women today.
MSU-IITโs delegation made a striking impression with a series of presentations grounded in fieldwork and community engagement in Lanao del Sur. Their contributions not only amplified the voices of Meranaw and Moro women in the Philippines but also advanced global conversations on gender, governance, and resilience. These area areas strongly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
29 May 2025 - ย The Department of History of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology participated in the ๐๐ญ๐๐ค๐๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌโ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ held at Nauvoo Farm Resort, Magalang, Pampanga, as part of the Five-Year Road Map for History Program Project funded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Representing MSU-IIT at the summit were Dr. Cecilia Tangian (Project Lead), Asst. Prof. Xandelyn Racel R. Baena (Assistant Project Leader), Ms. Janine Patilano (Project Staff), and Dr. Jamelyn B. Palattao, Chair of the Department of History. Also present was Ms. Lorelie Tare, Assistant Project Leader from the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
14 May 2025 -ย The Department of History of MSU-IIT hosted a ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐ซ-๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ at the PRISM Building Lecture Hall. The event brought together students, faculty, and partners from the local government in a shared effort to engage with the challenges and possibilities of historical work in the digital age.ย
The featured lecture by ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ญ. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐. ๐๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง ๐ . ๐๐ข๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฌ of the ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ-๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ง, introduced participants to the emerging field of Digital History, an approach that harnesses digital tools to gather, analyze, preserve, and disseminate historical knowledge. Far from being merely a technical exercise, the workshop offered students hands-on exposure to digitized primary sources, online archives, and digital storytelling platforms, while also prompting critical reflection on the silences, biases, and structural exclusions embedded in such materials.ย
