The MSU-IIT Historical Society (MIHS) stands as the official academic student organization representing the Department of History at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, operating as a dedicated community of students bound by a shared passion for understanding the intricacy of the human experience across time.
The primary goal of this organization is to nurture student’s passion for history and developing their historical consciousness. In an academic environment where the sciences and arts collide, this society works to ensure the past is never forgotten, extending its identity far beyond the classroom to encompass storytellers, researchers, and cultural advocates who organize forums, facilitate historical awareness campaigns, and participate in university-wide initiatives that place MSU-IIT on the map as a hub for historical discourse.
To serve as an officer of the MSU-IIT Historical Society is to accept the role of a relentless steward, with a purpose that transcends collective tasks to mold a space where history is viewed as a living narrative that forms identity rather than a static collection of dates. The MIHS officers are tasked with the responsibility of curating spaces for critical thought and bringing forth projects that are causal and effective. Perhaps the most unique aspect of serving in this society is the intrinsic connection its members share as keepers of history, for whom history is not just a major but a lens through which to view the world, a connection that manifests in ways such as, as interpreters wherein the officers understand that history involves interpretation, engaging with the people’s stories. As curators of memory, recognizing that the present seeks to be explained by the past and that it needs to be echoed through time. And lastly, as youth advocates, ensuring that the spirit of history finds a home in the hearts of the youth. MSU-IIT Historical Society is more than just an organization. Its members remain dedicated to their oath to remember, to question and to lead.
Highlights of Activities
On a MIHSsion: During Welcoming Week, the MSU-IIT Historical Society (MIHS), with the support the Department of History, engages new students through various activities to foster academic integration and historical appreciation. The "Histomazing Booth" transforms historical learning into an interactive experience, aligning with History Month, while the CASS Freshmen Welcoming Ceremony and a departmental orientation introduces students to the Bachelor of Arts in History program, its curriculum, and faculty. New history majors are also formally welcomed into the MIHS, learning about its structure, officers, and upcoming events like the Histolympics, ultimately integrating them into a scholarly community dedicated to history.
The MSU-IIT Historical Society actively participates in the annual National History Month celebration every August, aligning its initiatives with the mandates of National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). The organization treats this observance as an important platform for translating academic historical discourse into public engagement, organizing lectures and forums, and exhibits that examine Philippine history through the lens of local experience. This commemoration is also a sustained effort to foster critical historical consciousness within the MSU-IIT community and the wider public. This celebration is culminated by a week-long society event called "HistOlympics", where all BA History students showcase their grit, passion, and love for History. The week is full of celebration and activities in sports, literary, and art.
The MSU-IIT Historical Society, the unified student organization representing BA History students, is dedicated to promoting historical awareness, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation. In partnership with the Department of History, PAGLAYAG 2025: The BA History Pinning Ceremony is a milestone event that honors the dedication, perseverance, and academic growth of third-year history students. The ceremony recognizes their journey in the program, symbolized by the pinning of nameplates and the institute logo as marks of acknowledgment and achievement. Through the department’s tracking system—Education, International, Public, and Philippine-Asian—students refine their interests and prepare for specialized career paths. More than a celebration, PAGLAYAG ("to navigate" or "to set sail") represents a transition for aspiring historians, affirming their readiness for greater academic and professional challenges while establishing a meaningful tradition that recognizes future generations of MSU-IIT historians.
The Kasanaysay series is a weekly feature uploaded to the MSU–IIT Historical Society page that serves as an avenue for individuals to showcase their submitted write-ups, whether it be essays, stories, poems, or articles related to history. By combining the term “Kasaysayan” (history) and “Sanaysay” (essay), this program acts as a medium for historical reflection and expression through writing. Through this initiative, students are encouraged to foster creative engagement with history through social media, while also highlighting the importance of writing and promoting critical thinking within online spaces.
A portmanteau of “Kasaysayan” (history) and “Saliksik” (research), the Kasaliksik program is an initiative led by the MSU-IIT Historical Society, in collaboration with the Department of History, wherein it serves as the official research avenue for the BA History students. It consists of research colloquia, presentations, and other related academic activities that provide an opportunity for students to present and discuss their scholarly work. This program serves as a space for intellectual exchange between students and professors, encouraging deeper inquiry and a more nuanced understanding of historical events through research, especially from a local perspective.
Organized by the College of Arts and Social Sciences – Executive Council, the MSU-IIT Historical Society, along with the other six (6) societies gather for an annual competition that tests their athleticism, wit, creativity, and performing talent through activities categorized under Sports, Literary, Special Events, and Culture and Arts. Through participation, the members of the MSU-IIT Historical Society come together and work as one, strengthening camaraderie and collaboration as they represent their organization in various fields of competition.
In solidarity with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and Indigenous communities across Mindanao, the organization commits its resources to the annual Indigenous Peoples Month every October. Recognizing that historical work is incomplete without the inclusion of Indigenous narratives, the organization facilitates events, such as discussion forums, and cultural appreciation activities that centers on Lumad histories, knowledge systems, and contemporary experiences. October also coincides with the national observance of Museums and Galleries Month, providing an opportunity to further situate Indigenous histories within the broader framework of cultural preservation and public history.
“Alay,” a Filipino term meaning an offering or dedication, is one of the most anticipated annual events of the MSU-IIT Historical Society, traditionally held towards the end of the academic year. The event serves as a ceremonial tribute to graduating history majors who are about to conclude their academic journey in the Bachelor of Arts in History program. Apart from serving as a simple gathering, Alay is a symbolic offering of gratitude, recognition, and admiration for the perseverance and achievements of the graduates. It provides an opportunity for both faculty members and fellow students to reflect on the graduates’ journey in the program, recalling the challenges they have overcome, the knowledge they have acquired, and the friendships and scholarly bonds formed along the way.
